Facts

  • The complex is formed by five pavillions with a total exhibition area of 155,000 square meters. An auditorium and an office tower are also part of the complex.
  • The site was formerly occupied by Altos Hornos de Vizcaya (AHV), a company that employed more than 5.000 people at the height of industrial activity.
  • There is a parking for 4,000 vehicles below the exhibition area.
  • A total of 175,000 cubic meters of concrete were used in the construction. The concrete was provided by quarries in the province of Biscay.
  • The steel used in the construction of the pavillions would be enough to build four Eiffel Towers.
  • It is estimated that the pavillions can stand a maximum weight of 4,000 kilograms per square meter.
  • The avenue at the center of BEC that connects all the pavillions is five hundred meters long and 40 meters wide.
  • The pavillions and the office tower will use as much electricity as a 20,000 inhabitant town.
  • The pavillions don't have any interior columns. The weight is supported by the metallic outer structure.
  • Even though not located in Bilbao, the Exhibition Centre was built in order to replace Feria Internacional de Muestras de Bilbao that after sixty years of existence has proven to be too small.
  • More than 200,000 meters of fiber optic cable were used to bring broadband internet access to virtually every point in the complex.
  • Each pavillion has a height of 20 meters.
  • On March 1, 2005 two workers died at the construction site of the Bilbao Exhibition Centre.
  • The inauguration of the complex was delayed because of a strike in the spring of 2002 that lasted for two months.
