Facts

  • Newport is one of the earliest and largest mixed-use developments in the United States.
  • When the LeFrak Organization began developing the site in 1985, it was an abandoned rail terminal for the Erie Railroad.
  • Newport Associates Development Company, a consortium of three partners including LeFrak, was set up as a land bank and development company. The three partners were free to separately buy or lease land for their own developments.
  • The first masterplan, which included plans for the 80-story Tower America, was created by RTKL of Baltimore.
  • The Ehrenkrantz Group and Eckstut were hired in 1987, after the first four residential towers and the first office building were under construction, to develop a new masterplan.
  • The extensive development also includes the Parkside, Shore Club Condominiums, Towers of America, and Waterside Square complexes.
