Located on Thunder Bay on Lake Huron, Alpena is the largest city in Northeast Michigan. It is one of two anchor cities in Northern Michigan. Once a lumber town, the city's economy is now tied to its limestone quarry owned and operate by the Lafarge Corporation, which manufactures and exports cement. The city is also the headquarters of Bessemer Company, another cement-related business. Along with manufacturing, tourism is also a large and important industry for Alpena.
