Villahermosa is located between the Yucatan Peninsula and mainland Mexico near the Gulf of Mexico, 477 miles from Mexico City. It is one of the most modern cities in Mexico and the state capital of Tabasco. The area was founded in 1519 with the original name of Santa Maria de la Victoria near the site of an Olmec settlement. Today, the city is an important business center for the Mexican oil industry.
Tabasco 2000 is Villahermosa's modern urban center with plenty of restaurants, shopping centers, upscale hotels, and a planetarium. Some of the major tourist attractions include the Museum of Anthropology, La Venta Park Museum, and the beautiful the Lagoon of the Illusions.
