Sault Sainte Marie, founded in 1668 by French missionaries, is the oldest city in the state of Michigan, and one of the oldest cities in the United States of America. The city is located near the eastern edge of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, along the Saint Mary's River, opposite Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in Canada. The cities are famous for the Soo Locks, which are the busiest set of locks in the world. They offer vessels passage between the higher Lake Superior, to the lower Lake Huron which sits 7 meters (21 feet) below Lake Superior.
