Obernai was first mentioned in 778 and called Oberehnheim. Although it was surrounded with city walls in 13th century the prosperous times came in 16th century. Obernai became famous thanks to its flourishing arts and crafts and wine growing industry and exports, resulting in rich renaissance architecture. Today, Obernai is the northern gate to the Wine Route (Route du Vin d'Alsace) and a popular tourist destination in the region.
