Located in the San Joaquin Valley as the gateway to the Sierra Nevada recreation areas. This agricultural community was settled between 1849 and 1852 when many of the gold rushers decided to stay because of the area's excellent soil. The city, named for Royal Porter Putnam, was incorporated in 1902, some 40 years after he arrived to operate a store and a motel. For the past century, this town has continued to grow with population increasing over 300% since 1970.
