About Coos Bay

15,823 in city
27 km² (10 mi²)
Largest city on the Oregon coast and founded in the 1850s as Marshfield, the residents voted to change the name in 1944 to Coos Bay. Sir Francis Drake is thought to have sought shelter for his ships and crew at Cape Arago, the entrance to Oregon's largest bay, back in 1579. Today the Bay Area, as it is known along the Northwest coast, is famous for wood products, shipbuilding, and the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, the area's deep-water seaport.
