Simply put, it's the city that sugar built. Once home to Imperial Sugar, the city has now attracted other corporate interests to the area, and is well known for the impressive spurts in population and development in the last few decades. In the late 1990s, the city undertook a new plan to relocate the city's entertainment and social center from the old industrial areas of the early 1900s to the newer and more logical First Colony which began the expansion trend in the 1980s. This growth has resulted in new low and mid-rise buildings emerging along the Southwest Freeway (US 59).
