Located directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, Clarksville is one of Southern Indiana's Falls Cities, so-named for the series of rapids which expose a major Devonian-era fossil bed. Chartered by the Virginia legislature in 1783, Clarksville is also known as the "Oldest American Town in the Northwest Territory". The city is named for George Rogers Clark, a revolutionary war hero who helped secure American independence from the British with key victories in today's Indiana and Illinois.
