To Chicagoans, Hillside was best known until 2001 as the site of the "Hillside Strangler" – a formidable expressway bottleneck where the East-West and Tri-State Tollways met the Eisenhower Expressway. Considered the worst spot in the Chicago area for traffic, it was finally improved to fulfill one of the major campaign promises of Governor George Ryan. Besides the Strangler, Hillside is also known for its two large Roman Catholic cemeteries, Mount Carmel and Queen of Heaven. The former is the burial site for Chicago's cardinals and archbishops.
