About Pasaia

16,707 in city
372,451 in metro
11 km² (4 mi²)
Pasaia (Pasajes in Spanish) is located in the bay of the same name, and its urbanism and economy are completely dependent of the shape of the bay and the harbour located in it. Its origins as an independent city from Donostia or Fuenterrabia are quite recent (1805), although during the middle ages it had been an important port with intense whale fishing and shipbuilding activities, among others. Today Pasaia forms a urban continuum with Donostia and Errenteria, and is divided in four districts with a strong identity: the old districts of San Juan and San Pedro and the newer Trintxerpe and Pasai Antxo.
