Basauri is a town located right next to Bilbao. It’s very well connected by train and it will be in a couple of years by the underground of Bilbao. It has quite steep slopes and very dense construction. It’s home to a lot of buildings of more than 12 floors. Basauri is an imminently industrial city, with very big industrial companies located here, such as, Sidenor for example, a company that employs more than a thousand people. And another very important multinational as it is Firestone. It’s also home to the very first shopping mall created in the Basque Country “Bilbondo”, which is visited by many people from all around especially during the weekend.
Despite its past linked to industrial activities, Basauri is more and more changing into a services city. Some of the industrial zones under-used right now are being turned into residential areas or parks. The biggest fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market in the Basque Country “Mercabilbao” is located in Basauri, as well as the Local Prison. There are plans for the future to move those facilities into other towns, that will give Basauri some more room to expand.
Demographically speaking the town’s growth is completely on hold. The lack of building space as made unable to construct anything for the past 10 to 15 years.
