Founded in 1322, Portugalete was for many year a rival for Bilbao’s commercial activities. Nowadays is an industrial town at the left side of the Ibaizabal river inside Bilbao’s metro area. Portugalete is quite famous due to its Steel made bridge that connects Portugalete with the Right side of the river, Getxo. The town’s main activities as it happens with all the towns in the left side are of an industrial manner. And the town right now is trying to overcame the crisis that affected heavily the zone during the 70’s.
Due to its small extension and difficult relief, Portugalete has many slopes and it’s quite densely populated. The underground of Bilbao is expected to arrive in a couple of years to the town. It has a gothic church built in the 16th century, Santa Maria.
