Affectionately known by many as "The Gateway City", Laredo is the chief port of entry on the US/Mexican border. The two countries are linked by a railroad bridge and two motor vehicle bridges across the Rio Grande River.
The seat of Webb County, Laredo is an important river port as well as a center for agricultural products and natural gas production. The city was founded by Spaniards in 1755. It was separated into Nuevo Laredo , Tamaulipas, Mexico, and Laredo, Texas in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe.
