In 1878 a small town nestled on San Francisco Bay's eastern shore was incorporated as the City of Berkeley. Known as Oceanview the city was named after philosopher Bishop George Berkeley, born in Ireland in 1685. Today, a walk down Telegraph Avenue still speaks volumes of the colorful 1960s. Home to the famous University of California campus, fondly and forever referred to as "Berkeley."
