The home of Winona State University, Winona is a small city in a county of the same name in southeastern Minnesota. The city occupies a low plain between the Mississippi River and a former river channel, now called Winona Lake. Towering to the south are high forested bluffs including Sugar Loaf, a more than 500-ft pinnacle that took its unique shape in the mid to late 1800s when it was altered by a large limestone quarry. The city has a rich architectural landscape and supports a world-renowned stained glass industry.
