The home of Indiana University, Bloomington is located in a hilly forested area approximately 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Due to the presence of a large university community and the vigilance of local preservation groups, Bloomington still features a compact, pedestrian-friendly, and economically-viable downtown. Much of the limestone used in the American building industry comes from the Bedford region just south of Bloomington. Both the city and these limestone quarries were prominently featured in the 1970s classic movie "Breaking Away."
