Springfield is the third largest city in Missouri. It is located in the southwestern part of the state at the northern edge of the Ozark Mountains.
Springfield is home to numerous industries, most notably food and dairy processing. It is also a center of shipping, wholesaling, and medical services, as well as a tourist gateway to the White River region of the Ozarks. Southwest Missouri State University is located here along with several Christian colleges.
Springfield was first settled in 1827, platted in 1831, and incorporated as a city in 1847. It is the county seat of Greene County.
