Anaheim was founded by German immigrants in 1857 and incorporated as a city in 1878. It is located 25 miles southeast of Los Angeles in the Santa Ana Valley. The city is famous as the home of Disneyland Resort, which opened in 1955. Explosive growth followed and the old village grew to become the largest city in Orange County. Several tall hotels are clustered around the park and just south near the Anaheim Convention Center. Most of the historic downtown was destroyed by urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving little more than the Kraemer Building. Recent development efforts have focused on the Platinum Triangle area near Angel Stadium of Anaheim in the southeastern corner of the city.
