The largest city in east-central Indiana and the home of Ball State University, Muncie is the seat of Delaware County. First settled in 1827 as Munseetown, the city grew slowly until the Ball Brothers helped establish a large glass manufacturing industry in the 1880s. Additional industries followed, leading to today's diversified manufacturing base. The city became famous as the subject of the books "Middletown" and "Middletown in Transition" which were detailed studies of 1920s and 1930s-era American society by Robert and Helen Lynd.
