Portsmouth is an industrial city in southern Ohio. It is located at the confluence of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers, 82 miles south of Columbus. Major industries include steel, shoes, firebrick, plastics, and chemicals. Portsmouth was founded in 1803 and incorporated in 1814. The opening of the Ohio Canal, from Portsmouth to Cleveland, accelerated the city's growth. A major flood did great damage in 1937. Portsmouth is the seat of Scioto County.
