Steubenville is a major industrial center. Surrounded by rich coal deposits, steel and metal products are an important part of its economy. The city's history began with Fort Steuben, which was built here in 1786. A town was laid out in 1797 and named for Revolutionary War hero Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Steubenville is the seat of Jefferson County. It is located on the Ohio River near Weirton, WV, about 90 miles southeast of Cleveland.
