Located in west-central Texas about 200 miles west of Austin, San Angelo is the largest city in its immediate area. The city was originally formed as Santa Angela in the area of Fort Concho, which was built by the U.S. Army in 1867 to protect new settlers. Today, San Angelo is the seat of Tom Green County, and is home to several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
