The municipality of Sandton was formed on July 1, 1969, and was just a collection of small farms at that time. It lies in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg and got its name from a combination of the two suburbs Sandown and Bryanston, which are on either side of it. A new exclusive suburban centre was established, while at the same time maintaining the park-like residential areas of the two surrounding suburbs. The Sandton City shopping complex, which was the first major building in the suburb, is linked to the Sandton Square shopping complex and is the largest non-metropolitan shopping complex in the Southern Hemisphere. Currently, it is Africa’s richest square mile due to the exclusive developments and exclusive suburbs surrounding the centre, and in recent years it has become the hub of commerce in South Africa as major corporations moved from the city to a more park-like environment. It is also home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and major banks, as well as many head offices of major companies operating in southern Africa. Sandton however is reaching critical mass with traffic congestion, overdevelopment and a lack of available land, which means that things are going upwards, with new developments reaching over 30 stories.
