Lake Charles is an industrial city in southwest Louisiana, located 60 miles east of Beaumont and 210 miles west of New Orleans. It grew out of a logging settlement settled in 1852. It became a city in 1904, and is the seat of Calcascieu Parish. Lake Charles is the fourth-largest inland port and the largest rice-exporting port in the nation. Much of its industry revolves around chemicals and processing the region's rich resources of oil, natural gas, and sulfur.
