Newport Beach lies on the Pacific Ocean about 50 miles (85 km) southeast of Los Angeles and 85 miles (135 km) northwest of San Diego. Its sizeable harbor is one of the largest in the United States dedicated primarily to private recreational boats. Aside from light manufacturing, it has the character of a resort commuity and is considered to be the most expensive place to live on the West Coast. The town of Newport Beach was laid out in 1892 and incorporated in 1906, following creation of the harbor in the late 19th century. Much of the city was once part of the Irvine Ranch, which was developed starting in the mid-1960s as part of the Irvine Ranch Master Plan (see Irvine). The heart of the city is Newport Center, an oval-shaped district ringed by many upscale commercial offices and hotels. In the center of this ring is Fashion Island, one of America's most prestigious shopping centers. Tall buildings are also found along MacArthur Boulevard at the north end of the city near Irvine.
