First settled as Fort Finney in 1786, Jeffersonville was organized and renamed around 1801 to honor President Thomas Jefferson. The seat of Clark County and directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, Jeffersonville became known for a large steamboat industry in the mid 1800s. The economy has since diversified, but shipbuilding remains a significant part of the local economy. An annexation of approximately 10,000 new residents became effective on January 1, 2008, making Jeffersonville the second-largest city in the Louisville Metropolitan Area.
