Named by meat packer Gustavus Swift, the city is located between the San Francisco International Airport in Burlingame and San Francisco proper, and is situated alongside the San Bruno Mountains. In 1923 the city painted on the side of San Bruno Mountain the landmark-motto, SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY, in 60-foot high white letters on concrete as an advertisement for the times. No longer the Industrial City, but maybe that sign on the hill contributed to it becoming the Biotech Capital of the World.
