Ashtabula County's largest city is located on the shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Ashtabula River approximately 70 miles northeast of downtown Cleveland. Settled in 1804 by Matthew Hubbard, the town was named for the Native American word for "the river of many fish". Incorporated as a city in 1891, Ashtabula is today embarking on a revitalization plan for its downtown and harbor districts.
