Bradenton is a winter resort and agricultural trading center. Located on the Manatee River about 40 miles south of Tampa, it is the chief shipping center for winter vegetables on Florida's west coast. The city was named for Dr. Joseph Braden, who built a two-story house of concrete here in 1850. Hernando de Soto's 1539 landing in Florida is commemorated at the De Soto National Memorial five miles west.
