Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan. Located about 25 miles east of Lake Michigan along the Grand River, it is the commerical and transportation center of the western part of the state. Once known as the Furniture Capital of America, furniture manufacturing is still one of its leading industries. Grand Rapids was founded in 1826 by Louis Campau, a fur trader, and experienced early growth as a lumber center due to its proximity to Michigan's great pine forest. It is the seat of Kent County and the childhood home of President Gerald R. Ford.
