Located directly across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis. The city grew rapidly as an industrial center and peaked in 1950 at a population of 82,366. But the once bustling city was hit hard by the loss of industry and many of the city's grand buildings have been demolished or are in ruins. Large areas of the city are blighted by vacant lots and abandoned buildings. Revitalization efforts have centered on the city's riverfront. It is home to the Gateway Geyser, which is one of the tallest fountains in the world, as well as the Mississippi River Overlook, which offers a scenic view of the Gateway Arch.
