At 2,655 feet above sea level, Bluefield is the highest city in West Virginia. The center of a rich coal-mining region, Bluefield boomed during the early part of the twentieth century, reaching a population of over 20,000 as late as the 1950s. As coal-mining technology has advanced, the number of jobs has declined, leaving a significant skyline for the city of just 11,000 residents today.
