The seat of Westmoreland County is located southeast of Pittsburgh. The city began from the settlement known as Newtown. After Native Americans burned the county's original seat Hannastown, the new courthouse was built in Newtown. Upon incorporation on February 9, 1799 as a borough, the area was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) a Revolutionary War hero from Rhode Island.
