Ann Arbor is the home of the University of Michigan. Its main campus is located on the east side of the downtown area, with another campus located in the northeastern part of the city. Computer and electonics firms doing research and manufacturing are also part of the city's economy. Ann Arbor is located on the Huron River about 36 miles west of Detroit. It was founded by pioneers from Virginia and New York in 1823, who named it "Ann" for both of their wives and "arbor" for a grove of trees they admired there. The seat of Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor is also known for its many outstanding homes built in the Greek Revival style.
