Laval is a suburban city sprawled to the north of the city of Montreal. It was created in 1965 from the merger of 14 existing municipalities. Acting as a regional hub for the northern area of Metro Montreal, its economy lies on tertiary services, on light transformation industries and on phamaceutical and bio-technological sectors. Laval is also reknowned for its huge shopping centres. While much of its population works within the city, many commute to Montreal. The city has a cultural life of its own, from its dozens of cinemas and restaurants to theatres and even a symphonic orchestra. A popular tourist destination is the Space Sciences Centre, also known as Le Cosmodôme, which includes the Canada Space Camp.
