The first settlements in this area date back to 1000 BC, but the name was first mentioned in 1028. The city was granted City Rights in 1259.
The name 'Amersfoort' is also mentioned in the history of New York City. There the dutch founded a small village called 'Nieuw Amersfoort' near Brooklyn. The neighborhood was later renamed Flatlands .
Located in the centre of the Netherlands, the city became an important railway hub for the dutch railway company in the ninteenth century. Nowadays the city's central station has become one of the biggest in the country.
In 2006 the city was awarded as being the cleanest city in the Netherlands.
