Maastricht lies in the deep south of The Netherlands and is one of the oldest cities of the country. Founded by the Romans some 2000 years ago, it got its name from its river and the crossing of this river (Mosam Ad Trajectum). Maastricht has many remnants from its long history; among them churches, buildings, a bridge, and other historical sites. The city is the capital of the province of Limburg, and was the 'birthplace' of the euro, the European currency, which was a result of the Treaty of Maastricht which was held in 1990.
