Second largest city of Latvia, largest city in eastern part of Latvia - Latgale. First mentioned in 1275 when the city was located some 10 km to the east from its present location.
Although Daugavpils had interesting developments also before, faster development started in 1860, when the city was crossed by the newly built St. Petersburg - Warsaw railroad.
54,97% if inhabitants in the city are Russians by nationality and only 16,37% - Latvians. Daugavpils is industrial city. Nearly all local industry collapsed in 1990ies but nowadays there is seen recovery.
