Århus is the second largest city in Denmark, and the largest in Jutland. It is one of the oldest cities in Denmark and it was founded as an open trading area during the Viking Age. Its location was chosen because it was easy to access, and there were excellent opportunities for fishing at the mouth of the river.
At that time, around 1,100 years ago, Århus covered only half a square kilometre. Today, it contains more than 75,000 buildings and covers an area of almost 500 km2.
The Port of Århus is home to the largest container port in Denmark and the harbour play an important role in the commercial development. The city is also home to a large number of trail-blazing IT companies, extensive retail chains, research institutions, and lots of cultural offers. More than 50,000 people are following a higher education course of some kind here, and that gives Århus a sprawling nightlife and a young feeling.
Most of the high-rises in Århus are residential buildings constructed in the 1960s. During recent years some new proposals have been made. Among these the city's 2nd tallest high-rise building, Prismet, which was finally completed in 2001 more than 10 years after it was proposed for the first time.
