Daegu is South Korea's 4th largest city and the 2nd largest inland city with a population of roughly 2.5 million. Located in the central-southeastern part of the Korean peninsular, the city has long been the geographical center of Korea's southeast region. Daegu has played a vital role in the 5,000 years of Korean history and culture. It was the home of ancient Gaya and Silla culture that also spread to nearby Japan and was the region where Buddhist and Confucian cultures of Korea were rooted. This is the primary reason why there are so many historical places throughout the city. At present, Daegu has become the leading industrial base for textiles and fashions and is known locally as the "Korean Milan". Daegu's synthetic fabric production and export complex is the largest of its kind in the world. Building on these strengths, Daegu is currently working to establish itself as one of Asia's top fashion centers and hopes to compete on the global stage within the next few years.
