Rehovot's history stretches back to 1890, as one of the most successful Jewish towns in mandatoric Israel. Famous for its long standing orange groves surrounding the city, the town had already become the country's largest exporter of citrus fruits in the 1920s. In 1934, Prof. Haim Weizmann, the first president of the State of Israel, resided in the city and established the Ziv Institute for Scientific Research, world-famous today as The Weizmann Institute for Science. For a relatively small city, it has an impressive amount of academic institutions, a university hospital, agriculture research institutes, as well as hi-tech companies. Rehovot lies some 20 km south to Tel Aviv in the central part of Israel.
