  • The cost at time of completion was £1,229,128.
  • T. E. Lawrence, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia, once worked in the building.
  • In 1898 William Young, FRIBA, was commissioned to design the building but died two years later. The design was completed by his son, Clyde Young and Sir John Taylor.
  • Trapezoidal in plan, the building's design was influenced by the need to maximise space, determined by surrounding buildings.
  • The completed building employed around 26,000 tons of Portland stone, 3,000 tons of York stone and 25,000,000 bricks.
