Facts

  • The building was handed over to the Singapore Government upon its attainment of self-rule and it was designated as the official residence of the President of Singapore, but none of the Presidents has since taken up residence there.
  • During the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945, the building was occupied by Field Marshal Count Terauchi, commander of the Japanese Southern Army, and Major General Kawamura, commander of the Singapore Defense Forces.
  • Formerly known as Government House, the building was built by convict labour under the direction of Sir Harry Saint George Ord, Singapore's first colonial governor, as the official residence of the colony's governor.
  • The building was gazetted as a national monument of Singapore on 14 February 1992.
