Facts

  • Was the first hotel built between Coconut Grove and Key West.
  • Built by the pioneer Richmond family in 1900.
  • Charles Deering remodeled the cottage and turned it into his private family home in 1916.
  • The Estate remained closed for more than 8 years due to the damaged caused by Hurricane Andrew. It was officially reopened to the public in 2000.
  • Much of the natural Estate grounds, including the historic home, were severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew in August 1992.
