Facts

  • Having no side aisles the apsidal hall measures 27.5 by 67 metres.
  • The solid masonry walls are 2.7 metres thick and about 30 metres high.
  • Because parts of the complex were demolished and new structures were added, the only part of the imperial palace to have survived since the fourth century is the Aula.
  • The current building was built above the ruins of an even older palace complex from the second and third century.
  • It was originally built by Constantine I as the center of the palace precinct.
