Facts

  • Along with the nearby Merchants National Bank Building, this is one of two outstanding prairie school bank buildings in downtown Winona.
  • The architect, George Washington Maher, is also responsible for the J.R. Watkins Complex, including the Watkins Warehouse and Manufacturing Building, the tallest building in the city.
  • The building is constructed of light gray granite from North Carolina, and features some of the largest granite columns erected up to that point.
  • The interior is finished in dark green and white marbles, displays the original furnishings, and boasts Tiffany windows.
  • The architect relied heavily upon Egyptian and neo-classical themes, rendering the structure quite unlike most other large prairie school buildings.
