Facts

  • The Alamo was the second location of the Mission San Antonio de Valero. The mission was founded in 1718 by the Viceroy of New Spain and abandoned in 1793.
  • The building was the site of The Battle of the Alamo in 1836, in which Texas fought for its independence against Mexico.
  • The famous look of the building with its arched parapet wasn't added until 1850 by the U.S. Army during repairs to the complex.
