  • The museum contains more than 100,000 pieces of art, one million books, 5 million photographs, and 36 million manuscripts.
  • In 1974 the museum purchased a perfect condition copy of the Gutenberg Bible for $2.4 million. It is one of 11 in the US and 48 in existence worldwide. The museum also owns the world's oldest existing photograph taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826.
